Cancelled Interview Advice
Shit, shit, and tripple shit.
I was supposed to interview with this big global company for an ex-pat role far, far away from the US...full relocation package, car, tax package, six-figure salary and close to my fiance's home country....and then they cancelled the interview. :banghead: They were going to fly here from the mideast (UAE based) and then suddenly last minute change. Supposedly the global HR director changed his plans last week and we were supposed to interview on the phone this week....but not a peep. Called the recruiter 24 hours ago and then sent a quick email 12 hours ago, not a peep. :banghead: Shit. Now what? How long do I wait before I call the recruiter again? I have the global HR director's number....should I call him directly? It's for a fairly senior role so I think that would be OK, but then the question is when? DogFarm is basically looking at a free ride to start over in a new BRIC country and doesn't want to lose this opportunity. Suggestions? |

Keep on them, find out what is going on. Ride it all the way to the end. If you show interest in them, basically, they will show interest in you. That can be the difference between you or another candidate getting the role. |
Re: Cancelled Interview Advice
The next step in this scam is to ask you to wire them a deposit so they have enough cash to buy the plane ticket from UAE. (Then, when they arrive and interview you, you WILL get the 'job'!)

Actually, sounds like you dodged a bullet. You're this frustrated......and you don't even work for the assholes. Once again, screw them. Their loss, not yours. |

Re: Cancelled Interview Advice
I wouldn't call the global HR director personally if you've been communicating through a recruiter. That puts both of them in an uncomfortable spot and won't reflect well on you. As eager as you are, 24 hours is not that long for someone to be out of communication. It's also a very bad idea to embarass a recruiter by bypassing them. Many recruiters are in that field because they have prior connections, sometimes long-standing ones, to the management level of the field they're recruiting in.
I've seen this sort of thing happen over and over again with friends being recruited for positions high on the corporate ladder. Cancelled and postponed interviews are not uncommon, and getting a straight answer after the interview is also uncommon, as there are usually more people within the company that will need to interview prospective employees before they're hired. You're dealing with busy people for whom interviewing prospective employees is often the lowest priority on their to-do list for the week. If something has to move to make more room for a meeting, project, etc., then the interview gets moved. Interviews will also be delayed or cancelled if there's some unresolved issue within the company about the open position (such as which department it falls under, who will fund it, can filling it be put off for a month or two to make the budget look better, should it be transferred to a different division or branch). Even after the interview, there may be some uncertainty on both sides. An open high-level position in a corporation often becomes the object of a tug-of-war between departments or branches of the company. |

I hate to say it but at this point, it sounds like a dead-end.

If they are really interested, they WILL call you back. If they don't, you are the lucky one.

Re: Cancelled Interview Advice
I had the exact same thing happen to me.
I had an interview at a University in Oklahoma for a computer operations management job. I set the appointment. I traveled to Oklahoma on my own dime (Universitys are notorious for being cheap when it came to travel). I was outside the guys office at the correct time. He never showed up to his office. SO, his BOSS interviewed me. We hit it off great. He said he would 'get back with me ASAP with an offer' and promised to find out why his second in command never showed for the appointment. I NEVER HEARD ANOTHER THING FROM THEM. They refused to even take my calls. NO REASONS, just kind of a big F U. About a week later I ended up at the emergency room. Apparently my stress over the situation was SO HIGH, it cause me some problems with my digestive track. It was the first time my IBS reared it's ugly head. THAT was over twelve years ago. Good luck. Write it off. You will NEVER find out why. You just won't, because if they DO tell you WHY, you can sue them into oblivion. WHICH IS WHY you won't hear anything back from them. AND, calling them directly is a sign of desperation ON YOUR PART. Again, good luck, but I'd write it off as a lesson well learned and just keep looking. I think I would ALSO change headhunters, as the one you have apparently isn't as good as you thought. |
